Chairman Gowdy Statement on Mueller Indictment

Statement

Date: July 13, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Trey Gowdy released the following statement after the Department of Justice announced indictment charges against twelve Russian nationals for committing federal crimes intended to interfere with the 2016 election.

"Special Counsel Robert Mueller's indictment tells us what we have known all along -- Russia is not our friend. Russia attempted to sow the seeds of discord, undermine the fundamentals of our democracy and challenge the reliability of the 2016 election.

As I have repeatedly said, it is clear, based on the evidence, Russia had disdain for Secretary Clinton and was motivated in whole or in part by a desire to harm her candidacy or undermine her Presidency had she prevailed.

I am pleased Russia is being held accountable for their actions against our country. This was not an attack on Republicans or an attack on Democrats -- this was an attack on the United States."

Background

At the end of July, the Oversight Committee plans to hold a full committee hearing on election security.
